Gurges - a new VMs heraldic ID
Posted by: R. Sale - 07-02-2016, 10:04 PM - Forum: Imagery - Replies (8)

The heraldic pattern called gurges is a charge that generally has a spiral design. It is the Latin word for a whirlpool and is typically represented in alternating blue and white, but other colors can be used. There is also an second version of this pattern consisting of multiple concentric circles. Apparently the concentric version either preceded or co-existed with the spiral version very early on, and was then mostly supplanted by the spiral version.

The VMs Zodiac tub patterns also have an example of a concentric, bulls-eye design. My attempted connections to the jason davies site have repeatedly timed out. (Anyone having similar problems?)  I think it's on the outer left of Pisces, but you'll find it if you care to. It was one of the more obvious unresolved issues, but now it's been identified. Further evidence that heraldry exists in the VMs. And a further demonstration that heraldry is a valid investigative premise for the identification of tub patterns in the VMs Zodiac, Pisces and Aries pages. The investigation of identity then proceeds through the optical illusion of White Aries and on to the Genoese Gambit.

Plants and labels in pharma section
Posted by: Oocephalus - 07-02-2016, 02:19 AM - Forum: Voynich Talk - Replies (32)

In the "A and B plants" thread, René mentioned that some plants depicted the herbal section appear to be duplicated in the pharma section. I think someone mentioned some really convincing examples of this in the comments at Stephen Bax's blog a few months ago, but I can't find it. Does someone have a list of such occurrences? I think that, if the label of the plant in the pharma section occurs also on the relevant herbal page, this would be a strong argument for the text being meaningful, especially if the word is rare. Has anyone found such cases?
I've looked at some very rare plant labels (6 or less occurrences in the whole MS) on the pharma pages on voynichese.com to see whether they occur on herbal pages with similar plants. The only such case I found is the word "opchor" (6 occurrences total), which occurs as a label on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. (first row, third from the left) and also in the text on f13r. However the similarity between the plants is rather vague, and the word also appears on two other herbal pages with very different plants. Somewhat more convincingly, the word "otory" (4 occurrences total) occurs on f102v2 (first row, second from the right)* as a label for an oddly-shaped leaf and on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. (second row, first from the left) as a label for a plant with similar but somewhat thinner leaves. It may also be interesting that the word "okeoly" (6 occurrences total) occurs as a label on You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view. (second row, sixth from the left) as well as in the text immediately above the label.
I think that, although the presence of such cases is an argument for the text being meaningful, their absence would not necessarily refute this. It may be possible to encipher the same plaintext word in different ways, or the language could be highly inflected. For example, in a Latin herbal, the picture of a plant would probably be labeled in the nominative singular (e.g. "convolvulus"), but in the main text the word might occur only in other forms such as "convolvulum" or "convolvuli", which a simple approach like the one I tried would not find.
* I'm using the foliation from voynichese.com here, which seems to be the same as on jasondavies.com. Not sure if this is correct in this case.

Don of Tallahassee asked me to post these files which were too large for him to upload.
They consist of collections of images from medieval manuscripts which he feels share similar traits to images within the VM.

They are:

Register or Login to view.In my humble opipion, someone should assemble a file similar to my Scorpios file (the big one, not just the 24 or whatever the number is) on the Sagittarius archers to show likenesses, dates and areas of origin/use. That may reveal something hitherto unsuspected, especially if assembled from earliest date of appearance onward (as opposed to doing it region by region or for one specific region only). It needs to be as all inclusive as possible.

But not me.

I did the Scorpios and don't want to be a hog. (And I am essentially a very lazy person.)

Maybe it could be a community project with everyone sending in their contributions to a compiler person?

Thank you.

I hope I have included all relevant images. I attach a pdf version of the file.
I am grateful to Darren and Stephen for collecting and publishing all this valuable information!

The page includes other images originally pointed out by Rene Zandbergen and a possible candidate identified by David Jackson.

  THE PAIRING PARADIGM
Posted by: R. Sale - 04-02-2016, 09:46 PM - Forum: Imagery - Replies (7)

This is the pairing paradigm. But first, by way of definition, a paradigm is a pattern, and for VMs purposes. an investigative theme. And the replication of pattern in the manuscript serves as a sort of guide to the investigation. As opposed to those investigations based on a singular instance of a solo example.

Pairing is a sort of pattern. Certainly it is one of the simplest of patterns. Is there another pattern that is simpler? So it shouldn't be too hard to find for those who are searching for complex patterns of various types in the VMs to follow something so simple. Remember Deuteronomy 19:15.

The VMs Zodiac medallions contain three 'natural' pairings. Pisces, the first VMs sign, is a pair of fish. Gemini is a pair of twins. And Cancer is a pair of crayfish. Cancer as a pairing seems uncommon, as we expect a single crab, but some other paired examples do pertain, so it is a viable possibility. Now, if there were just some way to turn Aries and Taurus into pairs, there would be a series of these first five houses of the zodiac with each of them paired in one way or another.

Yet strangely, for some reason, what has been set forth in the VMs Zodiac is so disruptive that it is quite difficult to recognize what has actually been done. Each of the first five houses in the VMs Zodiac is a pair. Each is a pair in a sequence created by the author. That is the pairing paradigm - the start of the pairing paradigm. Among these pairs, there are various pairings. Further examples of pairing to verify the paradigm. And after the paradigm is formed in VMs Zodiac astrology, it is then carried on with the quasi-heraldic tub patterns on the first three pages of the VMz Zodiac.

Examples of pairing are found with varying degrees of difficulty, but the first and easiest is most readily found at the beginning of the VMs Zodiac. In VMs astrology, Pisces is a pair of fish, can't be any plainer - first thing. The splitting of Aries and Taurus is more difficult to reconcile. The combinations among the pairs are a third level of difficulty. In the tub patterns, the number of pairings of the four examples at the top of the outer ring of Pisces, sets this part of the paradigm on its way with a multitude of examples. Split pairs are exemplified by the semy of roundels and papelonney patterns found on separate pages. The third level of difficulty is finding the pairing that has been hidden within an optical illusion in White Aries, where a connection with history might be made.

All that is necessary to discover a means to understanding the VMs is to follow the simplest of paradigms on a pathway that is clearly marked by pairs. Those familiar with the origins of a certain event in the history of ecclesiastical heraldry will be at particular advantage in further investigation. Unless, of course, the author was a joker or something essential was cut out of the VMs and lost. Nevertheless, anything of this complexity can only be something that is the author's intentional construction. How far will the pairing paradigm take a VMs investigation? To Stolfi's 'start here' markers and beyond!

The Voynich Manuscript: The Mysterious Code That Has Defied Interpretation for Centuries

The Voynich MS is discussed, but not going beyond a summary of this earlier book. According to the author, there are some new details related to the lives of Wilfrid and Ethel.

  Dating of VMS
Posted by: don of tallahassee - 04-02-2016, 04:32 AM - Forum: Physical material - Replies (14)

A little over a year ago I tried to figure out the dates for the four individual folios that were carbon-dated and thus the date of the VMS. Attached are the results.

I was told afterward that the actual method was a weighted mean of the raw data or some such.

The answers come out about the same.

Thank you.
