Thought I would add this here. There are some aspects of Taoism that match with the astrology in the VMS.
Most obvious is the very frequent use of white or black dots connected with lines to represent stars and constellations. Its normal to see them in star charts, but they are also commonly used to invoke their power.

The character under the 3 stars is 敕令, which appears to mean "Imperial Edict", but also is used to represent Celestial Authority or Divine Power in taoist rituals and talismans. In that sense, it wouldn't be surprising to see such a concept used in a way like the rosettes, with the sun, the earth and celestial authority in the corners.
An important constellation is the big dipper, which is seen as "the supreme ruler of the heavens". "Pacing the Dipper" is a ritual where someone draws out the stars of the dipper on the ground and paces along them, reciting incantations in order to communicate with the gods.
According to You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.: "The Big Dipper is also called the Celestial Matrix and the Earthly Pattern. So the first function of the Pacing is to pace the Dipper according to the Diagram of the Stars. It is thought that by pacing it the ritual master, crossing the Nine Quarters and patrolling the universe, has been to the Nine Heavens, flying over the realm of Immortals."
If anyone is interested in rabbit holes, many examples of stars being depicted/used in this way can be found at: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.
