Christopher Allmand conducted extensive research on surviving Vegetius copies
Allmand, Christopher (2011). The De Re Militari of Vegetius. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. ISBN 9781107000278
I'll see if I can acquire this.
Vegetius wrote De re militari in the 4th century, but it looks like illustrated copies of this work only appeared one millenium later in the late 15th century The imagery is not original but contemporary with the copies. I have not found illustrated Vegetius copies earlier than 1470. To add to the confusion, there is also Roberto Valturio’s De re militari with similar imagery. I'll see if Allmand has contradictory evidence, but it appears that the late 15th century illustrated Vegetius copies borrowed from the existing Kyeser/Taccola/Martini/Valturio pool, not the other way round.
I do agree that the VM Rosette foldout might have been inspired by military architecture with You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.. This would again point to the VM artist not understanding or caring about the original purpose of the imagery he copied.
