San Marco mosaic (the rightmost image in my earlier post) is probably inspired by a manuscript known as Cotton Genesis:

Unfortunately we cannot be 100% sure how it precisely worked as Cotton Genesis was destroyed in a fire in 1731 and nobody did a copy earlier. Today we have only a few burnt scraps.

It was a very old manuscript, from 4th or 5th century. It's possible for me that dogmas weren't that strong at that time and some or quite a lot of pagan imagery leaked into it.
