Francesco di Giorgio Martini's sketchbook
#46
While in my opinion the likely VMS creation date has been pushed to at least the 1430s by Taccola's Palatino 766, I'm not yet convinced of a significantly later date. Martini's sketchbook BNCF, Fondo Nazionale II.I.141 dates to ~1490. That's quite a massive leap. Interestingly, it is also from Siena and was part of the Strozzi library during Carlo Strozzi's life-time (1587–1671).

Just like Taccola's Palatino 767 (the other Taccola manuscript copy!). We know Palatino 767 was part of the Strozzi collection in 1670.

Whether Palatino 766 was also in possession of the Strozzis is unconfirmed, its fate prior to 1730 is unknown. I still think the Libreria Strozziana may have been the source of VM imagery.
