This thread—actually, the whole forum—reminds me of the parable of the the blind Men and the Elephant (free version...)
An elephant was brought into a town. A group of learned men, who had however been blind from birth, had never seen one and wanted to know what it was like. They were led to the animal. Each one stretched out his hands and felt whatever part he happened to reach.
The first grabbed the trunk and said quite clearly: “An elephant is like a thick snake.”
The second put his arms around a leg: “Utter nonsense, there are no snakes that thick. It is a tree-like hybrid creature.”
The third got hold of the tail: “What ignorant fools you all are - it is like a whip, you can feel that plainly.”
The fourth felt the ear: “A whip? I have never heard such nonsense. It is flat and moving, like a fan, or a large leaf.”
The fifth leaned against the flank: “No, I am telling you the truth, it is a wall.”
The sixth touched the tusk: “It is smooth, hard and pointed, like a spear.”
