  A fascinating idea, but surely such large dams had no use in the medieval period. They weren't able to harness any mechanical use to the dam, so there was no point in building such a structure.

  I couldn't help laughing. That's the translation's fault. The word ( Talsperre ) does not only mean a dam for water, military it is a passage blockade.
  The same as ( Westwall, Atlantikwall, or English Siegfried Line. Romans = Hadrian's Wall or Limes.
  From wooden palisades mostly customs offices. From stone strategic blockades.
  
  A nice example is the Mühlbacher Klaus. It looks like the VM drawing. But it was built around 1500. The older wall stood 200 m further down and was torn down at the same time. It is quite possible that the old wall is similar to the VM drawing.
  But pure speculation, I did not find any pictures of the old wall.

  If I would take the VM castle and connect it to the base Bellinzona, the upper part of the VM would look like the example.
  The listed ruins belong to the same line of defense as the castles in Bellinzona. The age is almost identical.
  If you read through the reports of the reconstruction, it also answers some questions about the battlements and dating.
  The article about castles in general is also worth reading and helps for a better understanding.
  I personally do not consider it to be the place of origin, but it is a good example.
