I hadn't heard them called diapers, but diapering is a heraldic term referring to a type of patternation.

The VMs has several varieties of this pattern, a partial four way division of a quadrilateral. In the VMs, the dividing line can be a solid line or a loop. The four subsequent areas may be left empty or have a central dot for each area. Specific examples at top of Pisces and the circular text markers on White Aries. Otherwise, they're everywhere.

I’m really sorry I missed those discussions. I try to contribute to the paleography and art history stuff*  as much as I can because they’re my specialisms, but I miss a lot of stuff.

Quatrefoils isn’t a bad term for the pattern either, but if you’re looking for any discussions of that kind of pattern then “diaper” would be a good term to add to the search list along with some sort of filter to remove all of the American baby stuff!

I feel the same. But still it highlights all architectural features in the foldout.
